Semi-permanent Cosmetics for Your Brows

The shape, thickness and color of your eyebrows can dramatically affect your facial balance and overall appearance. In contrast to the overplucked, pencil-thin eyebrows that were popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, beauticians and stylists have realized that thicker, more defined eyebrows with the right shape and arch can frame your face to enhance facial symmetry and beauty.

Unfortunately, very few people have naturally full and perfectly shaped eyebrows. This leaves most of us to use makeup, from brow pencils and powders to creams and gels, to enhance the strip of hair above our eyes. But getting your eyebrow shape and style just right every day can be difficult and time-consuming, even for someone skilled using the right makeup and tools.

If you prefer to wake up with beautifully shaped and defined eyebrows that won’t smudge all day long, microblading might be right for you.

Step-by-Step Process

Is Eyebrow Microblading the Same as Eyebrow Tattooing?

Unlike traditional tattoos that create thick, dark lines in the deeper layers of skin, microblading creates individual hair-like strokes in the upper skin layers using ink with smaller pigment particles. This process results in natural-looking eyebrows. And because microblading offers semi-permanent results instead of permanent results like a tattoo, you can adjust the look of your eyebrows over time, if desired.

Step-by-Step Process

Who Is a Good Candidate for Microblading?

Microblading is an excellent option for individuals who want to enhance the thickness and definition of their eyebrows without applying makeup. Patients of any gender and skin tone can be candidates for this cosmetic treatment. Many microblading candidates have light or thin eyebrows due to genetics or sparse, patchy brows as a result of a medical condition, aging or overplucking.

Step-by-Step Process

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Microblading?

If you have highly sensitive skin, extremely oily skin or skin conditions like rosacea, keloids or cystic acne in the eyebrow area, you may not be the best microblading candidate. Microblading may irritate sensitive skin and worsen skin conditions. Oily skin doesn’t typically retain the pigment well, meaning the results may not last very long. If any of these conditions apply to you, discuss them with your microblading specialist so they can help you decide whether to proceed with the treatment.

What is Microblading

Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic treatment that creates the appearance of fuller, darker and more defined eyebrows. This treatment is customized to achieve your desired eyebrow shape and color.

How It’s Done

Our microblading technician uses a handheld tool with a row of tiny needles to manually create hair-like strokes of pigment on the skin’s surface, mimicking the appearance of natural eyebrow hairs.

What to Expect During Your Microblading Treatment

Microblading involves two sessions: one to design your brows and apply the pigment, and a second to touch up your brows as needed.

At Your First Microblading Session

Your first session typically takes one to two hours. First, we will consult with you to determine your desired eyebrow shape, size and color. Once we understand your goals for microblading, we will cleanse the area to remove any makeup, skin oils and bacteria. A numbing cream will be applied to make your treatment more comfortable. We will then carefully measure and draw an outline of where your brows will be. Once we confirm you’re happy with the shape, we’ll begin the microblading process of inserting the strokes of pigment.

At Your Second Microblading Session

Your second microblading session will take place four to six weeks later. At this session, we will fill any areas that may have faded or not retained the pigment well from the initial session.

What to Expect After Microblading

After microblading, you may have redness, scabbing and swelling in the eyebrow area for about one week. It will take approximately one month for your eyebrows to heal fully.

Applying Ointment

We recommend applying antibacterial ointment every few hours throughout the first day after your treatment. In the mornings and evenings, applying Aquaphor will help protect the area.

Avoid the Following in the First Week:

  • Getting your eyebrows wet
  • Swimming, saunas and activities that will cause excessive sweating
  • Applying makeup on the skin in your eyebrow area

Avoid the Following in the First Month or Until Fully Healed:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Touching, scratching or picking at the eyebrow area
  • Using exfoliating products, including retinoids and acids

Frequently Asked Questions

How Should I Prepare for Microblading?

To achieve the best results and reduce your risk of bleeding and irritation, avoid the following in the specified times leading up to your procedure:

  • Exercise (24 hours)
  • Alcohol (at least 24 hours)
  • Caffeine (at least 24 hours)
  • Blood thinners, such as aspirin and certain herbal supplements (48 hours)
  • Getting your brows tinted, waxed, threaded or plucked (one week)
  • Botox or other injectable treatments (two weeks)
  • Tanning/excessive sun exposure (two weeks)
When Will I See Results After Microblading?

Your eyebrows will appear fuller and more defined immediately after treatment. However, they will look darker initially and gradually fade to your desired color as they heal. Your final results will become apparent after two to three weeks.

How Long Do the Results of Microblading Last?

The results of microblading are semi-permanent, meaning they will gradually fade over time. With proper aftercare, your results can last up to two years. The longevity of your final results will depend on factors such as your skin type, age and lifestyle.

Undergoing touch-up treatments every one to two years can allow you to maintain your fuller, more defined eyebrow appearance.

Does Microblading Affect Your Eyebrow Hairs?

No, microblading will not affect your eyebrow hairs or their natural growth. If you choose not to have future microblading treatments to maintain your results, your eyebrows will return to their natural appearance once all of the pigment fades.

Is Microblading Safe?

Microblading is considered a safe treatment for most patients. It is essential to choose a reputable and experienced microblading technician to perform your procedure. The technician should be trained and licensed in tattooing and follow proper hygiene and safety protocols to minimize the risk of infection or other complications.

Can I Combine Microblading With Other Semi-permanent Cosmetic Treatments?

At The Lifestyle Center, we offer various forms of semi-permanent cosmetics so you can enhance your features without having to put on makeup every day. Microblading is often combined with semi-permanent tattooing (micropigmentation) of eyeliner, lip liner and full lip color. Microblading patients may also choose to use micropigmentation to conceal scars and stretch marks as well as to create “beauty marks” on their face.
