BOTOX vs. Dysport vs. Jeuveau in St. Louis: How to Choose

If you have started looking into wrinkle-relaxing injections, you have probably seen three names: BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau. They are often described as interchangeable, and in one sense they are related, all three are made from the same purified protein. But they behave a little differently, and the right one for you depends on your facial anatomy, the area you want treated, and your goals. Here is an honest, plain-language comparison so you can walk into a consultation already knowing the right questions.

One thing up front: all three are prescription treatments that should be administered by a trained, licensed injector. The differences below guide the choice, but your provider makes the final call based on your assessment.

What they have in common

BOTOX, Dysport, and Jeuveau are all forms of botulinum toxin type A. They work the same way: by temporarily relaxing the specific muscles that create dynamic wrinkles, the lines formed by repeated expressions like frowning and squinting. They treat the same core concerns, mainly frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet, and they all wear off gradually, typically over three to four months. None of them is a filler; they relax muscles rather than add volume. If volume loss is also a concern, that is where dermal fillers come in, and the two are often combined.

One important point: their units are not interchangeable. A “unit” of Dysport is not equal to a unit of BOTOX, so comparing price per unit across products is misleading. What matters is the total treatment and the injector’s skill, not the sticker price of a single unit.

BOTOX

BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) is the most established of the three and the most versatile. It is precise, which makes it a strong choice for detailed work and smaller muscle groups, and it has the longest track record and the widest range of studied uses. For many patients and injectors it is the default, dependable option.

Dysport

Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) has smaller molecules that spread a little more once injected. That diffusion can make it efficient for larger, broader areas such as the forehead, and many patients notice onset a bit sooner, often within about 2 to 3 days. Some injectors reach for Dysport when they want soft, even coverage across a wider area.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA) is the newest of the three and was developed specifically for aesthetic use. It is FDA-approved for frown lines between the brows, and its behavior is broadly similar to BOTOX, with a comparable onset. Patients who want a modern, cosmetic-focused option sometimes choose it, and injectors may suggest it as an alternative within a treatment plan.

How to decide

Three questions usually narrow it down:

  • Which area are you treating? Broad zones like the forehead may favor Dysport’s spread; precise or smaller areas often favor BOTOX.
  • How quickly do you want to see results? If you have an event coming up, Dysport’s slightly faster onset can matter, though all three settle fully within about two weeks.
  • Have you responded well to one before? If a product has worked for you, there is usually little reason to switch. If results faded faster than hoped, your injector may adjust the product or the plan.

Notice that none of these questions is “which is strongest.” Strength is not the differentiator; matching the product and dose to your muscles is. That is why the honest answer to “which is best” is almost always “it depends, and that is what the consultation is for.”

Combining with other treatments

Neurotoxins address movement lines, not volume or texture. Many patients combine a neurotoxin with dermal fillers to restore volume in the mid and lower face, and with skin treatments for tone and texture. A provider can sequence these so they complement rather than compete. You can also explore the broader set of wrinkle treatment options if you are not sure a neurotoxin is the right starting point.

Our approach at AesthetiCare STL

We offer all three neurotoxins, which means we are not trying to fit every patient to one product. In the Frontenac area of St. Louis, our injectors assess your muscle activity, facial structure, and goals, then recommend the option and plan that fit you, and tell you honestly if a conservative first treatment makes more sense than a full one. The goal is natural movement, not a frozen look.

Not sure which neurotoxin is right for you?

Book a consultation at AesthetiCare STL in St. Louis. We will assess your goals and recommend BOTOX, Dysport, or Jeuveau based on your anatomy, not a one-size-fits-all default.

Frequently asked questions

Is one of them stronger than the others?

Not in a way that matters for choosing. They use different units and formulations, so they are dosed differently. What determines your result is the injector matching the right product and amount to your muscles, not the “strength” of the product.

Can I switch between them?

Yes. Many patients try one and switch if they want faster onset or different coverage. Your injector will adjust dosing because units are not interchangeable between products.

How long do results last?

All three typically last about three to four months. Duration varies with the area treated, dose, and your metabolism. Regular maintenance keeps results consistent.

Will I look frozen?

Not when dosed appropriately. The goal is to soften lines while preserving natural expression. Conservative dosing at your first visit is a good way to find your comfort level.

Who should not get a neurotoxin?

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions, an active infection at the injection site, or a known allergy to the product should not be treated. Share your full medical history at your consultation.
